Support Services

Members and Friends of Peoples Church have support available in times of need:

  • Minister: Available for spiritual direction and short-term counseling, and provides pastoral care to congregants who are hospitalized, homebound or in nursing homes, or experiencing a difficult situation
  • Good Neighbors: Volunteers willing to serve Peoples' members and friends in time of need with specific short-term tasks, e.g., meals, grocery shopping, light housekeeping, lawn-mowing, snow-shoveling, etc.
  • Paraministers: Volunteers who have received special training who assist the minister in providing pastoral care to congregants who are hospitalized, homebound or in nursing homes, or experiencing a difficult situation.

Social Activities

We'd like newcomers as well as our long-time congregants to know about the regular social activities that take place during the year. We hope you will feel free to join any or all that appeal to you! Please see The Peoples Voice or the Sunday Announcements for information on specific meetings.

  • Second Friday Social: The Second Friday of each month (except December), UUs gather socially at the home of various Peoples' people. Anyone interested in an enjoyable time and good conversation is encouraged to attend; it's also a great opportunity for newcomers to get better acquainted with us. The host provides the home. The guests provide our own snacks and drinks to share, and remove our own leftovers. Everyone is welcome; no RSVP is necessary.
  • Wednesday Lunch: Every Wednesday, from noon to 1 p.m., available UUs have an informal lunch at Gringos, 207 1st Ave. SE no reservations are needed. Everyone is welcome.
  • Committee Night Dinner: Pizza is served free of charge on the second Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Andre Room, preceding committee meetings. This is meant to be a time for individuals and families to gather socially. Childcare is then provided during the committee meetings (6:00 to 8 p.m.).
  • UUAN: Second Wednesdays at Noon, interested people gather at the church  to discuss books, articles, or videos. We are always delighted to welcome new people.
  • Van Vechten Guild: The Guild, named for Ada Van Vechten, has been a gathering place for Peoples Church women since the early 20th century! The Guild meets at noon on the second Tuesday of the month, September through May (excepting December), for lunch, conversation, and a speaker. There is a small cost for membership and for lunch. New women are always welcome.
  • First Friday Noon Book Group: Interested readers bring their bag lunches and meet to discuss a new book at noon on the first Friday of the month. Meetings are usually held at Village Ridge, 365 Marion Blvd.
  • Max Landis Bridge Group: You needn't be a member of the American Contract Bridge League to play with this group; the emphasis is on fun and all levels of players are encouraged to participate. The group meets approximately monthly on Friday evenings at Village Ridge, 365 Marion Blvd.
  • Other Activities: Other social events take place during the year, e.g., Small Dinners, Cook's Night Out, Service Auction, Sisterhood Dinner, Movie Night, Special Lecture series, Peoples Reads, etc. Please watch the Voice for information on these.
